“Yeah, we went on a date yesterday,” I said as I lifted my glass of sparkling water and focused on the tiny bubbles.

“Well, how did it go?”

“It was nice,” I said lifting my shoulders ever so slightly.

“Just nice?”

I looked up at Chris and told him all about how the date had gone, how easy it had been to talk to him and how the ladies at the cafe were eying him up.

“Well hallelujah girl! I take it you’ve met your future husband?”

I looked away out toward the street, it was busy with people going to and from work on their lunch breaks and some tourists, there were always a lot of tourists in Edinburgh. One woman was helping some middle aged couple that looked a bit lost, pointing towards the castle. The rain had died down a bit but it was still drizzling. I thought of Dave and felt confused. From what I had seen on our date, he seemed perfect, obviously nobody’s perfect, but Dave, he had all those traits I’d always wanted in a man. Easy to talk to, handsome, kind, humble and driven. I couldn’t believe I wasn’t imagining planning our wedding right now, I wasn’t my usual romantic nutty self, and I couldn’t explain why. As soon as that thought hit me the man from my dream popped up in my head, Peter. I shook my head, as if waking up, ’get a grip’ I told myself, he’s not real.

Chris was looking at me with a confused expression. “You OK Alex? You zoned out for a bit there.” “Yeah, yeah I’m fine.”
