The night was uncomfortable. I couldn't fall deeply unconscious, instead caught in a limbo between dreaming and waking. Images of Samantha and Sarah were haunting me, but then the image of William protectively lifting me up into the sky was there to wash away the others. It felt so real that I almost thought that William was there in the room, watching me. It was probably the magic of his ring that made me feel that way.
The morning came. As soon as the first ray of sun illuminated my room, I felt my mother sitting down on my bed.
"How was last night?" She asked, sounding excited.
I panicked for a moment. I didn't know the lie that I had told her over the phone.
"Surprising..." I said and tried to turn away on my side, faking a hangover until I could talk to Maggie. But then my mother hugged me from over the sheets.
"I'm so proud of you. Your sex life has finally begun!" I had never heard her so happy before.
"Well yeah...but it's not like it's a big deal." I lied; this was easier than anything else.
"Well baby. It is a big deal. You are finally enjoying your body. But don't get too serious about this boy. You need to try and compare. Don't limit yourself if anything better comes along. You have the right to explore it too. And whatever you do, don't commit. You are your own woman!"
I wanted to say something to make the mess smaller, but Mom seemed so happy. This was what she had been trying to teach me all her life. I couldn't bring myself to let her down by telling her the truth. I mean, I could just lose my virginity at a party this weekend if I felt like it, right?
For some reason Elle was about to say something, but Gabe and Brie tackled her and tied her up, covering her mouth in an instant. Whatever she'd been about to say, they didn't like it.
Then I remembered. I had no car.
"Or glasses."
I could hear Mom in the kitchen, the familiar sounds of her making herself a cocktail. By the time I was going to be done getting ready, she probably wouldn't even hear me leave. She also probably wouldn't notice the lack of car for the moment. She had her own that used to get some shopping once in a while and to drive around to meet some friends I suppose. She never told me where she used to go.
I knew I had to take at least three different buses to get to college. So I toasted a bagel, made myself some coffee, and sat at the computer to check the routes. I also wanted to see if there was any news about the accident I had last night.
Nothing. William and Maggie probably erased all proof of it.
HI wonder if they could fix my car." I really couldn't afford a new one and taking the bus was a pain in the neck.
HFirst world problem..." Brie said, and I decided to suck it up and just find the routes. I had a spare old set of glasses so I put them on.
"I need to get new ones before I got a headache" My prescription was minimal. I had an eye muscle imbalance, so I could get away with it for a few days.
I calculated that I needed to leave two hours early to make it in time for my class. I didn't want to imagine how long it was going to take to go to work now.
I took some money from the emergency cash envelope that I kept in the bottom of my closet. Along with some coins from my penny jar. I looked for some old glasses I could get a day pass for just four dollars, so hopefully there wouldn't be any problems with the change.
When I went outside, I was surprised at finding a pink convertible Citroen waiting for me on the front street.
“Maggie!" Her usual black garments stood out on the girly decoration.
"Hi Gabrielle!" She waved, nudging her dark sunglasses down on her nose and looking at me over them, like an old movie star. "William told me
