Jake

After the trip to Vegas, I had been chatting online to Jake quite a bit. One day, a few months after Vegas, he mentioned he was going to Hawaii for Thanksgiving and asked if I had ever been. I had never been, but it was one of those places that I was desperate to go to. Mainly because I was intrigued to think of the possibilities of what could happen between us, when he offered to pay for me to fly out there and meet him for Thanksgiving, I agreed, kind of thinking it would never really happen. But within twelve hours, he had astoundingly booked me a flight. Although I was terrified about telling Ben, I was so excited to go to Hawaii and also pretty excited to see Jake again. I just had a funny feeling deep down inside that I should go.

Six weeks later, and after a lot of in deep conversations with Ben, I flew to Hawaii to meet Jake. We spent six days in one of the most gorgeous hotels I have ever been to, with customer service that was out of this world. Probably because the place was so romantic, but also because he was so attentive, loving and kind, I started to fall a little bit for Jake, and to be completely honest with you, I don’t think any girl on this planet would blame me.

One day he took me snorkelling. We had a lovely day but in the back of my mind I couldn’t help but think it would never really go anywhere, after all we lived in different countries and I was no way moving to America after what had happened with Guy. So on that day, on that holiday, for some unknown reason, I thought it would be a good idea to push this lovely, nice, kind American man to his limits to see what he was really like. So, in the car on the way back to the hotel, I started to become a spoilt little brat, demanding things that were completely unreasonable, sulking when I didn’t get my own way and forbidding him to touch me or even look at me. Now that was completely unlike me, but I had seen many of Ben’s friends’ girlfriends act that way, and also obviously had a lot of in-depth experience of spoilt little brats from watching Guy’s sisters over the years. For some unknown reason I found it funny when I watched those girls act that way and so thought I would give it ago myself. I knew I was being completely unreasonable, but in my head I was laughing away to myself, silently imagining myself to be the fourth sister Guy’s family had always wanted. However, Jake had so much patience he did not bite even in the slightest, and to be honest, I was a little disappointed. Much to my growing annoyance, he just apologised over and over again for upsetting me.

When we got back to the hotel, I immediately got into bed and hid under the covers, refusing to speak to him or answer his questions. I knew I was being a complete bitch, but it was too late to give up then and for some reason, unbeknown to me, I found it funny. In the back of my mind however, I couldn’t help but think I would never be able to act that way with Ben, as he would not stand for it, and I liked that. When I started ranting about my phone charger, which was broken and only charging on the odd occasion, I heard the door close, and I knew he had had enough and had left. I sighed to myself in disappointment that, number one, I hadn’t completed my mission and number two, he obviously couldn’t hack the pace!

Having had a very long day snorkelling, I fell asleep thinking about how I’d no doubt be single forever, and after some of the things I’d done over the previous two years, I probably deserved to be. I don’t know how long I had been asleep when I heard Jake come back in. He threw something on the bed and walked away. I began to feel a little guilty about my actions, after all he didn’t know that I was laughing inside, and so I asked him where he had been in order to start up a conversation. I was still hiding under the covers when he said, ‘I went to get you a phone charger.’

I was a little taken aback that he would go to all that trouble just to get me a phone charger, especially since he had the same phone as me and so I could have just used his charger, but tried not to show any emotions, as at the end of the day it was just a phone charger. But when he followed it with, ‘But I couldn’t find one so I brought you this,’ I was intrigued to see what he meant. When I rolled over and saw a brand new iPad (obviously complete with a charger for my iPhone) on the bed I was so shocked I didn’t know what to do or say. What a smart man, I thought to myself smiling. ‘The best things in life are unexpected – because there are no expectations.’ — Unknown.
