Chapter Seventeen
A yellow cab drove through the streets in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia until it finally reached its destination on Simpson Street. The cab door opened and Chris stepped out. He walked behind the cab as the trunk hatch was released allowing him to remove his bag and suitcase. He stood on the sidewalk looking at his house as the cab drove off. He hadn't seen his home in weeks. It seemed forever. One of the neighbors greeted him before he climbed the steps and unlocked the door. Chris stepped over the small pile of mail and shut the door. The house smelled musty and dust covered every surface. As much as he just wanted to lay down, he knew that he had to clean.
Two hours later, Chris took the trash out and headed for the supermarket. He felt a little more at ease, both physically and emotionally. There was no place like home. After leaving, he walked back towards his house feeling good about everything that happened. Reaching his house, Chris saw a sight that he couldn't believe. Dawn was sitting on his steps. She smiled as he stood there holding the bags.
“What are you doing here? I thought you'd be at your parents' house,” he asked.
“I just thought you'd need a room mate when you're at work. You know, take care of your house while you're gone,” she said.
Chris cocked his head to the side and set he bags down as she came down to him.
“Chris, I love you. I learned and I have changed. I just want to know if we can start again and learn to love each other right this time.”
He smiled and set the bags down and took her hands saying, “Are you going to stick around this time?,” Chris asked.
Dawn laughed, her eyes glistened in the sunlight. “Baby, you are stuck with me. I don't need Michael Rodriguez to convince me of that...”
Chris silenced her with a deep passionate kiss. She held him tightly, letting go of her emotions. They slowly parted and she helped him with his bags into the house and shut the door.
