Change and Distractions

Change

Change is a necessary evil when attempting to stay sober and in recovery. You may have to make lifestyle changes including but not limited to changing your friends, changing where you hang out, and changing your eating habits.

Friends

Many of us drank more with our friends who liked to hang out at local watering holes or restaurants. Choosing friends that are sober and want to stay sober is helpful when achieving full sobriety. Choose friends that like to go on trips, hiking, fishing, workout, and other social activities that promote health and wellness. This is a necessary distraction to take one's focus off drinking.

Places

If you must, stay away from bars and places you once liked to socialize and drink heavily at. I no longer patronize certain restaurants because these were places I used as watering holes. Then there are places like my private fraternity I once drank at that I continue to visit because I can offer service to this organization and I have friends/family there that are huge supporters and proponents of my sobriety.

Distractions

Taking on a second job on a part time basis or getting involved in extracurricular activities is key to staying sober. I volunteer to cook at various events throughout the year and this helps me avoid thinking about drinking. Meeting with friends and doing meaningful things can also be a good distraction.

Keep yourself busy, but not to the point where it stresses you out, becomes a new addiction, or causes an increase in your anxiety.

Remember, we have to learn to walk before we can run. Take it one day at a time. Stay sober and stay safe.
