Staff Settings and General MIDI Instruments

If you are working with General MIDI compatible instruments, you can get a lot of score formatting “for free”:

1. Open the Preferences–Scores–Editor Behaviour dialog.
2. Activate the option “Staff Settings adapt to General MIDI rules”.
3. Close the dialog.

Now, Program Change numbers and MIDI Channels set for the Tracks in the Arrange window will be linked to certain properties in the score:

• Tracks set to Program Change 1 to 8 will automatically be set to a Piano staff (since these Program change numbers correspond to piano instruments in General MIDI).
• Tracks set to play bass sounds, tuba and trombone will appear on a bass clef.
• Tracks set to play viola sounds will have an alto clef.
• Tracks set to play Trumpet will have a Display Transpose setting of +2.
• Other brass and woodwind instruments will also have Display Transpose settings: soprano sax +2, alto sax +9, tenor sax +14 baritone sax +21, piccolo and pan flute -12.
• All Tracks set to MIDI Channel 10 will be set to a drum clef with two voices, and a default mapping of the drum notes (which can be changed, see page 291).
