Chapter XVI: How the End was the Beginning
"Deborah! Deborah, wake up!"
Deborah woke in a room surrounded by her friends. Samson and Gideon were by her bedside. Her vision was blurred at first, but soon everything came clear.
"You gave us quite a scare there," said Gideon.
"You‘ve been out for a few days. We thought you were a goner."
"How are you?"
"I'm fine---where is Iya?"
Gideon and Samson looked at each other.
"She is no more," said Samson. "We found you both in Saragose. We thought that you were dead. By the way we found this on her."
Samson pulled out the crest of instruction. He placed it around Deborah's neck, she smiled.
"Samson, where is your crest?" said the cheetah. "I gave it to a creature more deserving than I."
Tiber popped up from Deborah's left. He was wearing the crest of commerce. "Who knew that a thief would end up becoming a leader of a nation?"
"The Lord knew." Said Gideon.
"But what will you do, Samson?" asked Deborah.
"God has given me another job to do. A prophet has much to do. I have to go now, stay in touch."
Deborah and Gideon said good-bye.
" Deborah, I'm sure you have many questions," said Tiber. "Of course, what happen to Jezerah?"
"Well, she'll be spending a few decades in prison. If I‘m correct, she should be in her nice, cold and dark cell right about now," replied Gideon.
At Grandford prison, Jezerah sat quietly in a cell. Her head was lowered and her teeth gritted to the point of cracking.
"LET ME OUT! LET ME OUT! SHAVRON IS MY COUNTRY, YOU HEAR ME? I'LL KILL ALL OF YOU! CURSE THE RABBIT, CURSE THE RABBIT! I HATE HIM, I HATE THEM ALL!"
The fox's words echoed throughout the palace's dungeon. Her voice would never again command another guard or terrorize another commoner. She raged on for a few more minutes and then went quiet to ponder over her future life in Grandford Prison.
Back at Shavron, Gideon ran outside just to catch Barrachus and Leopold walking away.
"Hey you two, hold on!"
Gideon went over and shook both of their hands.
"I guess the Challenger's Vow is off," said the coyote.
"Yup, but why didn't you leave when we came to shore? You were free to go at anytime?"
"I thought I might stay around a little longer, you know, just to make sure you didn't try any funny business."
"Well I'm glad you stayed," said Gideon. "In fact, your welcome to make a home here you don't have to live a life of an assassin."
"No thank you, I better be on my way. You know you are the only assignment that I am glad I did not kill," replied the coyote smiling.
"So you do have a heart?" came Leopold interjecting.
Barrachus: " You on the other hand…" said Barrachus to Leopold, "I should have been targeting you."
Leopold and Barrachus went to bickering again. Gideon tiptoed away as the two argued in the distance. The mole and the coyote circled each other with their fist clinched as if to start a boxing match. Barrachus picked Leopold up and placed him under his arm like a stuffed toy. Leopold swung and kicked in fury.
"Unhand me, you naïve," shouted Leopold, " before I smite thee with all my strength!"
Barrachus turned his head and waved good-bye. Gideon returned the favor.
"Godspeed to both of you."
The citizens of Shavron returned to serving the God that was always in control despite their wayward desires. The judges were restored to their position, but in a fallen world happy endings only last for so long. In time, Shavron strayed away from the trust of God once again. However, the Holy One was not surprised by this: for he knew how it all would turn out in the end….but that's another story.
