Cat Tale 28: It’s a Day or Night Thing

In general, for any species (and individual), our behavior is the key to who we are and how others perceive us. It’s a reflection of our personality and inner feelings, and has everything to do with our social relations and acceptability by others or not.

This is our next broad subject, and my goal is to share some details with you on what my species is like in general, of course recognizing that each kitty is unique and that there’s always a few who don’t even conform to the norms at all. What a wonderful and fascinating world we live in, wouldn’t you say!

To begin with, we have what I personally call day cats and night cats. Do you know what I mean, thinking about some of your own furry friends? In other words, some of us are more active in the daytime hours, our being ready for territory patrol, grasshopper pouncing, string attacking, or whatever might grab our attention. On the other hand, others are pretty much laid-back, drowsy creatures when the sun is up, but late at night and in the wee hours of the morning are full of energy and the adventuresome spirit.

That’s just the way it is, okay? To my knowledge, we don’t consciously make a decision as to which of the two options we prefer, but simply adopt this behavior from an early age onward.

I myself do wander around a fair amount in the nighttime on an occasional basis, recognizing that it’s a whole different world once that big ball of fire in the sky drops out of sight in the evening. But during a typical 24-hour period, I sort of like to keep an eye on what’s going on both in my house and outside from sunup to sundown. This is when there’s more activity in general in my neighborhood related to the movements of other cats, dogs, and much of the alluring insect population that boldly wanders around in my yard. Therefore, being a responsible kitty, I need to be up-to-date on the happenings and ever-changing circumstances in my environment.

As a species, our activity is thus somewhat varied and changeable according to daily events and is also greatly affected by the presence of our caretakers or not. They most often hang around in the early hours of the morning and the evenings, except for the weekends when the whole routine gets messed up and ya never know what they’re going to be doing, and when!

You see, when our caretakers are at home with us, we like to get into some extended socializing because we enjoy being with them so much. In addition, it’s important to be on the lookout for what they’re up to in that kitchen room where many hidden treats and munchies can suddenly appear out of nowhere and might head down our way to floor level at any given moment.

The unspoken but well-known guideline is that when they are in the kitchen, we should always be accompanying them. This allows us to respectfully demonstrate our interest in their activities and show our desire to take part in the eating of any delicious things that might become available. We do hope that you appreciate our interest.
