Along the bank of the river of life, a symbol of the eternal ebb and flow of being, strides Death symbolized as a skeleton clothed in black armor and riding astride a white horse carrying the banner of the Rose Cross, a symbol not of death, but of Life. Before his relentless forward march all fall: the young and the aged, king and peasant, princess and priest alike for all, regardless of their station in life, are destined to pass through this dark gate and undertake the passage of transformation from a lower to a higher state of being. The banner of the Rose Cross he carries hints at the secret of the eternal evolution and transformation of life and the knowledge that Nature embraces both the visible realm of matter and the invisible realm of Spirit. In contrast to most depictions of this most dreaded reality, Death swings no scythe as he claims his victims. The river whose path Death follows flows out from between the two pillars over which the Sun, the symbol of Divine energy, is seen rising in the grey background. Seen in this manner, the mounted skeleton of Death becomes an instrument of progress bringing both transformation and renewal as the agent of transition from one realm another. Death invokes an atmosphere of an immediate need for a radical transformation to get the energy of life moving again towards whatever may be its goal may be even if it is the dissolution of physical form, relationships or institutions.
