Chapter 10

THE NEW SWINGTON ESTATE

0225HRS

MARION HORACE

Nothing here Jamie boy. I cannot understand a darn word. It is all

mumbo jumbo to me.

JAMES HORACE

[Stretches his hands in the air]

Me too. If those are demons, it must be a legion out there, each

humming its own dialect.

MARION HORACE

I told you.

JAMES HORACE

Or maybe it is a church sect doing some religious shenanigans.

MARION HORACE

Come on James, you don’t really believe that do you. Besides, alcohol is

involved. They are drunk as a kite.

JAMES HORACE

Where did they get alcohol from? It is not like they got a stopover at the

wines and spirits at Cosgrove Mall or something.

MARION HORACE

I don’t know. Maybe they brewed it. Maybe they brought it with them.

JAMES HORACE

They sure are having fun at our expense.

MARION HORACE

That woman laughing heinously like that. Who does that?

JAMES HORACE

A Basenji dog.

MARION HORACE

A what now?

JAMES HORACE

Basenji dog. It doesn’t bark. It yodels.

MARION HORACE

Of course it does.

SARAH DJIMON

Why haven’t they called the police? I mean people are hearing that

madness, right?

JOHN KNOWS

[wakes up and goes to the living room]

I will have a word with the Council Rep for housing, tomorrow. This is

just the beginning. They will keep disturbing the peace. It is in their

nature. It is impossible to get rid of them once they establish roots.

They are like weeds. We must nip the bud from the start.

SIMON SENECA

[Looks at his clock by the nightstand]

Did they have to do this on a bloody Monday? Just 1 hour after I have

slept?

JOE SMOCKER

[Grunts, shifts about and finally lets go the blanket and jumps out of

bed, he finds Lenny already out of bed, his eyes scanning about]

Jesus! What the hell Lenny!

LENNY SMOCKER

[sneers]

Our camper friends at it Joe, I told you they were poison.

JOE SMOCKER

What language is that?

LENNY SMOCKER

I wish I knew mate. You would think they would learn to speak the

lingua franca.

JOE SMOCKER

They are immigrants. Not all of them come from English speaking

countries. They will learn on the job.

LENNY SMOCKER

On the job? What jobs Joe?

JOE SMOCKER

Hell if I know. I suppose there is always something to do. Maybe do the

things we can’t or won’t do.

LENNY SMOCKER

I see you are Minister of Economics and Labour.

That aside I think they are being a nuisance right this moment. They

will continue like this unless someone stops them.

JOE SMOCKER

I don’t like that look in your eyes, Lenny. We’ve just been released on

probation.

LENNY SMOCKER

Who said anything about being caught? We’ll go on stealth mode. Some

James Bond shit.

HOOPTE GOBBLEDYGOOK

JOE SMOCKER

Don’t be ridiculous Lenny. James Bond wouldn’t be caught dead in this

cold night because then he would be ordering hot tea, not a Vesper

Martini. We are staying put. Let the authorities take care of it.

LENNY SMOCKER

[Smiles from the corner of his mouth]

You are damn right the authorities are going to take care of it.

The Smocker Police Department…

JOE SMOCKER

I see you are nuts Lenny.

LENNY SMOCKER

[stands straight and gesticulates]

It is quite simple actually. We pour gasoline, light up a match and be

back in bed before the conflagration.

JOE SMOCKER

The what? Scratch that. Forget about it. It is not happening. If you think

I am going with you to burn up that campsite, you have another thing

coming.

LENNY SMOCKER

I can’t do this without you Joe. We have always dispatched duties

together. Side by side. You and me.

JOE SMOCKER

And look where that has gotten us.

LENNY SMOCKER

Your objections have been well noted. But look here, if you want we can

make it easy. We will use explosives, quick in, quick out.

JOE SMOCKER

Explosives? As in explosives, explosives?

LENNY SMOCKER

Yup. More bang for our buck. Quicker too.

JOE SMOCKER

Jesus!

LENNY SMOCKER

Jesus has nothing to do with it. You in or out?
