What We Eat – Our Calorie Consumption

When we consume more calories than we burn our bodies store the excess calories as fat. As I talked about earlier our bodies know how to ensure our survival and will store away excess fat to help us through leaner times in the future.

However today those times are few and far between and because we live in the developed world rarely are there ever any times when food is truly scarce. The result; we continue to keep storing fat away.

Compared with 100 short years ago, you would be hard pressed to find any of our ancestors being obese because they had to work hard to find food. They didn't have the option of being able to just find food without any effort. Every day was a struggle and required all of their energy. Because of this effort to find their food they burned up every calorie they could consume. Compare this to the present day situation; we have food everywhere, we don't have to put much effort into finding it and we have food that is quick and easy to make.

Even what was considered luxury items such as flour, sugar and sweets, to our ancestors are now incorporated in to our daily meals. Food is too accessible and our choices include many that are unhealthy and cause us to gain weight. Overindulging is easy and effortless.

As a result of this easy access to all foods we are left to find ways to get rid of the fat we spent years gaining. If only we would look at how we live our lives and realize that we have lost a connection with food and our bodies. We need to return to the understanding that we need all the food groups but we need to exercise good judgement and moderation in how we eat.

Understanding how your body operates, how your body burns fat, and what makes your body gain weight is instrumental in your ability to lose weight for the long term. We must educate ourselves on nutrition. exercise and setting goals. Our bodies want what is needs and we must create a nutritional plan that delivers everything in a healthy and sustainable way.
