Chapter 13

Amy, in a hospital gown, sat at the end of an examination table in one of the rooms in the emergency ward of the West Valley Hospital. She looked old, exhausted, and scared to death.

By her side was Rick, Wilma, and Tim still in his heavily grass-stained soccer uniform.

Wilma, Barney, Wilbur, Dorothy, and Edith waited in the room, and they all looked worried.

"How do you feel sweetie?" Kate asked Amy while she rubbed her back.

"I'm feeling a little better."

Tim looked concerned about Amy for the first time in his young life. "Is Amy going to be okay?" he asked while he walked up to her.

"Yes, Tim," Kate replied and didn't want him to worry.

Amy smiled at Tim and lightly rubbed his cheek with affection.

The door to the examination room opened, and Doctor Adams entered with a clipboard in her hand. She walked up to Amy and opened up the clipboard. "The blood tests found nothing abnormally wrong," she told Kate and Rick while she glanced at the clipboard. "I still want Amy to see that Werner's Syndrome specialist," she said while she jotted down some notes on her clipboard.

Rick, Kate, and Wilma looked worried.

Amy was in deep thought and didn't look scared or worried about the doctor's comment.

"I'll call LA and make arrangements to fly Amy out in a couple of hours," Doctor Adams said.

Kate and Rick looked worried to death while they glanced at Amy.

Doctor Adams closed her clipboard then looked at Rick and Kate. "I'll be back in twenty minutes to prep her for flight," she said while she walked to the door and left the room.

Kate's eyes welled up while she looked at Amy, who was still in deep thought.

"Randall said that disorder is inherited," Amy said while she looked at Kate, Rick, and Wilma. "Do we have a family history of Werner's Syndrome?" she added.

Kate, Rick, and Wilma thought about Amy's question.

"I never heard of anybody in my family having it," Kate replied.

Wilma walked over to Amy. "Me neither," she said.

Rick nodded in agreement with Wilma and Kate.

Amy was in deep thought for a few seconds. Her eyes lit up. "Dorreen!" she cried out.

Wilma looked confused. "What does she have to do with this?"

"Didn't you tell us she practices voodoo?" Amy asked Wilma.

"Yeah, I did, why?" Wilma replied and wondered where Amy was headed with this discussion.

"Dorreen overheard me in the kitchen, talking mean about old people to Laurie. I even called her spooky," Amy said then she thought for a few seconds. "I believe she put a voodoo spell on me!" Amy said while her eyes lit up with confidence that that was the answer.

Rick and Kate thought Amy had gone loony.

Wilma thought about Amy's comment for a few seconds. "You know, during my birthday party, I recall seeing Dorreen walking out of the living room with a pair of scissors in her hand. She also had an evil smirk on her face. But I didn't find that odd because she often had that evil smirk on her face," Wilma told Amy, Kate, and Rick.

Rick's eyes widened a little when he remembered something. "You know, on Sunday morning, I noticed that Amy had a chunk of hair cut on the back of her head. I didn't think anything of it considering how the rest of her body had changed," Rick told Kate and Wilma.

Kate and Wilma quickly looked at the back of Amy's head and saw where some hair had been cut.

"That's gotta be it!" Wilma cried out, and she looked convinced.

Amy jumped down off the table. "Let's make her reverse it," she said while she cringed in pain from jumping off the table.

Amy rushed over to Wilma and stood by her side

"You can't leave. The doctor wants to fly you to LA," Rick told her.

"Trust me. I can feel it in my aching bones. Dorreen did this to me!" Amy cried out.

"Wilma?" Kate said while she looked at her for a response.

Wilma pondered Amy's conclusion for a few seconds. "It's the only thing that makes sense to me and explains why it happened overnight," she said.

"Are you sure, Aunt Wilma?"

"That highly educated quack doesn't know what caused Amy's condition. It has to be Dorreen and her voodoo crap," Wilma said while she placed an arm around Amy.

"What if she won't cooperate?" Rick asked Wilma, and he didn't feel this was a good idea.

"She will if I talk to her," Wilma said while she looked determined and a pissed with Dorreen.

Kate and Rick both looked unsure but knew this might be worth a shot.

"Go for it," Kate replied.

Rick pondered the proposed solution. "But if she's not back to normal by Monday, we're letting Doctor Adams fly her over to LA," Rick said.

Amy had a gleam in her eyes, as she knew Dorreen could reverse her aging condition.

"You guys go outside while Amy changes," Wilma told Wilbur, Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Tim.

While they left the room, Wilma, Kate and Rick quickly got Amy dressed in her clothes.

A few minutes later, Wilma poked her head out the door. "Is the coast clear?" she asked Edith.

"The doctor's not in sight," Edith replied while looked up and down the hallway.

Kate, Rick, Wilma, Wilbur, Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Tim rushed Amy through the waiting area of the emergency ward.

"Amy!" Laurie cried out from the waiting area the second she saw Amy.

Amy's eyes lit up when she saw Laurie and Randall seated in the waiting area.

Amy stopped and looked at Laurie and Randall while they rushed over to her.

"Why have you been ignoring me?" Amy asked Laurie while her eyes welled up.

Laurie felt like a jerk while she looked at Amy, who looked so much older from the last time she saw her. "I'm so sorry. I couldn't stand to watch my best friend age before my eyes," Laurie said while her eyes welled up.

"It hurt me," Amy replied.

"I know, but I'm here now," Laurie said and hugged Amy.

"We better hurry up before the doctor sees us," Wilma warned Amy.

"Come with us, Laurie," Amy said then she looked at Kate and Rick for permission.

"Please do," Kate replied to Laurie.

Laurie nodded in agreement.

Wilma, Kate, Rick, Wilbur, Barney, Dorothy, Edith, Laurie, Randall, and Tim rushed Amy out of the emergency ward.

They all ran over to Wilma's Thunderbird and Edith's Crown Victoria parked in the parking lot.

Amy looked at Kate and Rick. "I want you two to go home and wait while we contact Dorreen," she told them.

"No, we're going," Kate told Amy.

"Now listen to me, you wanted me to stay with Wilma, and I'm going to stay with her. Now if Dorreen can't reverse my condition, I'll have her bring me home Sunday evening, and you can have Doctor Adams send me to LA," Amy said and looked like a parent.

"Don't worry; she'll be in good hands with me," Wilma told Kate and Rick.

"Can I help?" Tim asked and looked worried for Amy.

Amy walked up to Tim and placed her arm around his shoulder.

"Sorry, buddy. I need you to stay and take care of mom and dad," Amy told him then kissed his forehead.

Tim looked disappointed, and Amy noticed.

"I never get to have fun," he said while he pouted.

Amy felt sorry for Tim. "I'll tell you what. I'll buy you a PlayStation game of your choice afterward," she told him.

Tim's eyes lit up with joy.

"Okay Amy, we'll wait at home," Rick said while he kissed her forehead.

Kate kissed Amy on her cheek. "Bring my teenage back to me, Aunt Wilma," Kate told her.

"I will, but we better get out of here before the doctor chases after us," Wilma told everybody.

Wilma and Amy got inside her Escort.

Laurie and Randall got inside her Corolla.

Barney got inside his Impala along with Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur.

They all started their vehicles.

Rick, Kate, and Tim watched the three cars drive away then they got inside their mini-van.

Back in the hospital, Doctor Adams went inside the examination room where Amy was supposed to be waiting.

"Are you ready to fly to LA?" Doctor Adams said then it dawned on her that the room was empty. "Amy?" the doctor called out while she ran over to the bathroom then noticed it too was abandoned.

Doctor Adams ran out of the examination room and ran down the hallway, searching for Amy.

Doctor Adams ran out of the entrance to the emergency ward and looked around the area for Amy.

"Where did she go?" Doctor Adams asked while she scanned the parking lot for signs of Amy, but didn't see her.

She turned around and walked back into the hospital, worried about Amy's location.

During the drive to Wilma's home, Amy looked a little concerned.

"Are you sure Dorreen will reverse what she did?" Amy asked Wilma.

"I know she will. She borrowed five hundred dollars from me a couple of months ago when she was in a pinch. I'll let her know that if she reverses this spell, I won't ask for the money back," Wilma replied.

It was a quiet drive for the rest of the trip back to Wilma's home.

The second they arrived at Wilma's home, she rushed into her kitchen and called Dorreen's phone.

Amy, Wilbur, Dorothy, Edith, Barney, Laurie, and Randall anxiously waited in the kitchen.

Wilma looked disappointed while she had the phone stuck to her ear. "Dorreen, this is Wilma. I need you to call me ASAP. It's an emergency so you can call me anytime during the night," she said into the phone then hung up and looked at everybody. "Dorreen's out, so I left a message."

Amy's hopeful eyes turned into worried eyes.

Wilma, Barney, Dorothy, Edith, Wilbur, Laurie, and Randall all waited in the living room for Dorreen to return Wilma's call.

Two hours passed and Dorreen didn't call back.

"Why don't you guys head back home? I'll call as soon as she calls me," Wilma told Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur.

The phone in the kitchen rang, and everybody's heart skipped a beat, knowing it was Dorreen.

Wilma and everybody rushed out of the living room and headed into the kitchen.

Wilma rushed over to the phone. "Dorreen!" she answered.

"No Aunt Wilma, it's me, Kate. I was calling to check up on Amy," Kate said from the phone.

"I tried calling Dorreen, but she's not at home. So I left a message and will let you know as soon as I hear something," Wilma told Kate.

"Okay. Call me the second things change," Kate replied and sounded worried.

"I will and don't worry. Amy's still in good hands," Wilma replied, then hung up the phone.

Wilma looked worried while she stood there and stared at the silent phone.

An hour passed, and Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur went back to their homes.

Wilma made up the couch into a bed for Laurie and used an air mattress in her computer room for Randall's bed.

Amy was exhausted and went to bed and fell fast asleep.

Wilma made a pot of coffee and sat in the kitchen, staring at the phone waiting for Dorreen to call.

It was four forty that morning, and Wilma fell asleep at the kitchen table, still waiting for Dorreen to call.
