(172-173) Works of Love

Our Duty to Be in The Debt of Love

Love Is Not Bookkeeping

We can never calculate

The scope of our love's debt

Nor should we compare our rate

Of how our payment is expressed

Accounting is for things finite

And love has no tawdry limits

It grows with payments of delight

For all the debt of love permits

No over-payment is ever possible

To underpay cannot exist

Love's payments are always responsible

It's our fullness and makes love persist

Love is not a set transaction

Some worn out business formality

We know love is divine attraction

And will always owe for that totality

When we love in every moment

Every second pays the debt

Every payment does love foment

We give love freely and not to get

In that sense, love is categorical

It is quite simply right

The benefits are peripheral

When seen in the divine light

The light of love must shine beyond

The limits of one lover

All our neighbors can thus respond

To the love of God uncovered
