(172-174) Works of Love

Our Duty to Be in The Debt of Love

The Infinite Value of Debt

The one we love is not in debt

But to the lover the debt accrues

In love that's not a cause for the least regret

For such a love we want and choose

It is a debt that has no principal

No enforceable kind of interest

This debt is really quite unusual

It has no date of finish

This debt is not contractual

The schedule of payments is infinite

It does not fulfill some business practical

Because love itself has no limit

We do not make of love bookkeeping

Eschew love as a transaction

Love is an endless seeking

Of love's eternal satisfaction

There is no bill submitted

For some tawdry goods received

The one we love is not to debt committed

In such coercion we don't believe

We pledge our love eternally

So it makes an infinite debt

There's no part-payment especially

Full payment we can't forget

Some can feel this debt of love unfair

Until we reflect quite critically

Could we, in love, but ever dare

To say, "I've fulfilled my love's bankruptcy?"
