(245-246) Works of Love Part III
Love Hopes All Things and Yet Is Never Put to Shame
Believing and Hoping
"Do not believe in believing
But still believe in me"
That's the stunning overreaching
The hope of post-modernity
Somehow they would possess
The thing that they destroy
Causing more than hopelessness
And create a noetic void
To believe this talk is empty
Elicits the greatest shame
A picayunish, envious vanity
To hope for nothing that you claim
The nothing believer believes anything
An expectation completely credulous
Wanting to bring back something
Hoping nothing feels so perilous
To hope in all is the lover's honor
Thus to reach for the kingdom of heaven
Makes hope believers all the stronger
When they might feel life as a burden
As we hope for our salvation
In some way we are already saved
So we believe our destination
Is not an empty grave
The lover believes in hoping
Hopes for those who refuse
Hoping can be forgiving
Hope offers all refuge
