(268-270) Works of Love V

Love Hides the Multiplicity In Silence

When we tell of another's sins and faults

We may well increase their multiplicity

As in the fact that rumors grow

We become guilty in our complicity

In that way, we might learn to be silent

For fear of inspiring corruption

To speak of sin, we become compliant

And can fail to refuse that temptation

Some arsonist may set a fire

Yet it's not done with impunity

A scandal monger's words can inspire

To burn down a whole community

In that way, the most depraved

Is not the criminal but the reporter

This conclusion is most grave

We are wise not to be the author

Gossip is a swift infection

That spreads from word to mind

It draws away all introspection

To the good it makes us blind

When we judge others, we feel superior

It may bring us great worldly gain

We have made a bargain which is inferior

When naught but evil then remains

When we want to others level

Especially those of great celebrity

We speak loudly like the very devil

And discover their sins in multiplicity
