Who Abandons Whom?

When we enter Dante's hell

There is a sign when we draw near

"All hope abandon" it clearly tells

Which in us evokes much fear

Without hope, there's just despair

Not even that at most

This is a place that is not there

Like the shadow of a ghost

What could cause such condemnation

Known to be eternal?

Did the divine make this determination

To the horrors most infernal?

Could the God of love and grace

Cause such endless suffering?

It might seem as a sacred disgrace

But that sounds like an impious muttering

The divine has granted us a chance

To choose life in free will

This hopeless hell may just enhance

What gave the damned their thrill

Their thrill became their idol

In worship of themselves

It's not that God is spiteful

The damned have made their choice of hell

God has not abandoned them

They have made their fraud

It takes one simple prayer, Amen.

But they have abandoned God
