I SAW YOU AS A SHADOW

I saw you as a shadow

The memory of you slowly fades.

I’ve come to reckon on my recollections

Your face always disapproving and full of rage.

With what little empathy I’ve mustered,

I sat here and I’ve wondered

If you ever exuded any light.

To whom did your light shine?

It’s hard to see any light

In the things you’ve left behind.

It’s nearly impossible to find joy in others

When you believe they have crushed your dreams.

Alone, I circled a life of emptiness

Eventually brimming with anguish.

I’ve come to realize the futility

Of seeking your acceptance.
