Hypothermia

Remember To Send for Help – Call an Ambulance

 

Note

The Patient must be warmed slowly.

img19.png Warm the core temperature first, not the extremities.

img19.png Do not immerse the patient in warm water as this may stress the heart

Signs and Symptoms

img19.png Confusion and irrational behaviour

img19.png Tired

img19.png Shallow breathing

img19.png Slow pulse

img19.png Loss of consciousness

Treatment

img19.png Move the patient to a warm place

img19.png Cover them with blankets

img19.png Give them a hot drink

img19.png Give them high energy foods like chocolate.

Outdoors

  • Lay the patient on something to keep them off the cold ground
  • Remove wet clothing
  • Cover them with blankets or a sleeping bag
  • Call for medical assistance
  • If the patient loses consciousness treat as per the unresponsive patient protocol
