“I’m gonna head home now,” I said smiling gently at him. He looked a bit sad and it made me feel guilty.

“Ok, Alex I hope you’ll let me see you again?”

“Yeah, of course,” I said as we stood up. I looked up at him and felt like I needed to say something. “Look Dave, it’s not you OK. You’re great! You’ve made a really great impression on my friends as well. I just have some stuff I need to figure out.”

“It’s you I want to make a good impression on,” he said. Then he looked like a thought hit him. “Is it another guy?”

I looked away for a second.

“No, it’s just complicated.” I looked back up at him. “And you have made a good impression on me.”

We hugged and he held on a little longer before giving me a kiss on the cheek.

“I’ll see you soon.” “Yeah, I’ll see you soon.”

I smiled at him as I turned and walked out the doors into the bar where I couldn’t see Lisa or Chris anywhere, so I walked out onto the street thinking they might have gone outside again, if that’s even where they’d gone in the first place. When they’d said they were going for some air earlier I had seen it as an excuse to let me and Dave have some time to ourselves and I suspected that they wanted some time to themselves as well. I turned my head to the left and then to the right. A few yards away I saw two familiar heads locked together in a passionate embrace. It looked more like they were about to eat each other alive.
