“Oh!” She looked curious. “Someone special? She looked like she really wanted to say something but contained herself.

“Erm, well…”

“The thing is,” my mum cut in. “We went past your flat to leave a letter for you from your gran and Lisa was there, and she happened to mention this new fellow of yours, Dave was it? He sounds amazing!” Her eyes were big and she was looking at me excitedly.

“She what? She told you?!”

I felt a bit annoyed that Lisa had blabbed about a guy I had just met to my nosy mother.

“It’s nothing really.” I shook my head and looked down. I didn’t want to tell them about Dave because I had no idea if there was a future there, but I didn’t like fibbing either. My mum and dad had always had some sort of super power, where they could tell whenever I was lying. Either that or I was an awful liar.

“It’s just a guy I met last Friday, no big deal.” “Well what is he like? Is he well educated?”

’Well educated’ was high up on my mother’s list of priorities when it came to men that were wooing her daughters. She wanted me to be well looked after and not end up with a guy with no prospects. She meant well although it could seem a bit shallow. Of course there were other important things to her, but lack of money, she told me, was like poison to a relationship.

“I don’t know, I haven’t asked.”

“Well, as long as he’s not like that boy you dated a few years ago, you know, the one who took drugs.”

“Mum! Ssh!” Not wanting Christine in the other room to hear that and think I dated guys who took drugs.
