In 25 Years, It Won’t Matter
Just as I have, I know that you have come across events when you thought that it was the end of the world for you. That things couldn’t get any worse, or there is no way you could cope with how tough life was (I recall breaking up with my first serious girlfriend felt that way to me at 20). Think of the time when you were preparing for exams in high school. It seemed like the biggest burden on your shoulders. I’m sure that today you would agree (and at times chuckle) as to how big you made it out to be, when it wasn’t. What always amazes me is that over time, whatever seems to be a giant challenge is in most cases shrugged off lightly some years down the track.
Most people make a big deal out of small things. Many sweat the small stuff. Why? How could it possibly serve you in your quest to win? Winners always ask, ‘Will this matter in the long run? Will it matter in 25 or 50 years time’? In most instances it won’t. So, whatever the challenge, they focus by keeping their eye on their prize. You will see these winners stand out as calm achievers.
Always remind yourself about putting things in perspective, and remember that almost all challenges are diluted in their impact when you spread it over a long time span. You will realize no one giant challenge is and should ever be that troublesome.
You’re well aware of this, because there are many experiences that you can look back in your own life where you can easily see that nothing was ever as big a deal as it seemed in that moment. It never did and it never will.
When most people breakdown because of a challenge, winners breakthrough, knowing that ‘It’s not that big a deal’.
You think you have challenges, speak to someone who hasn’t had the pleasure of the basic things you have had so far in life. Think of all the people who went to bed last night and never got a chance to wake up this morning. I believe that this would be the biggest deal we all will ever face one day. If you’re reading this today, it means you have been given an opportunity of living another day (please make the most of it). As long as you are breathing, as long as you are awake to face another day, then no challenge can and should ever be so big for you to remain consumed in.
Let things slide. Ask the smart questions. Put every challenge in perspective and push forward. That’s how winners play the game. No one event will ever be the ‘be all or end all’. It’s never a big deal, so stop ever making it one.
Take a moment to reflect on this truth. Consciously live this truth in week 45.
