(119) Works of Love III A
Love is the fulfilling of the law
God is the Middle Term and the Beloved
To love our neighbors as we are bidden
We find God is the middle term
It seems as if there is something hidden
And something we must learn
The middle term must find its presence
In that closest of our relationships
All of a sudden it makes great sense
When our beloved is in love's grip
To love as we love often means possession
We wish the beloved to give us all
This can become a rather bleak obsession
Into which we can easily fall
It's dangerous to their God-relationship
Which makes such love real love's denial
Love is not an idol that we must worship
It's the love of God that's final
Without the divine then all is confusion
All things are bereft of meaning
In loving God we find truth in profusion
And discover we are really living
All true love can bring sacrifice
To help the beloved find their true expression
And this is not some cunning device
But brings a change to our love's direction
Such a change in love can bring real tension
The beloved may see it as a threat
Until they realize the divine intention
A new love's sense they'll not regret
