(130-131) Works of Love
Love is the fulfilling of the law
"Mortgaging Oneself to Evil... Power, Honor, the Satisfaction of Desires"
Dostoevsky's Grand Inquisitor
Is of conflicting love a parable
When Jesus returns as visitor
The Church finds him unbearable
For He forsook old Satan's promises
From His love of human freedom
For this the Inquisitor admonishes
Such love lacks his worldly wisdom
Jesus would not turn stones to bread
While mankind gives up soul for hunger
Real freedom mankind views with dread
They want bread and some magic wonder
Humanity needs some miracles
Not burdened by great choices
They want things flat not spherical
And to obey real ordering voices
Freedom for them is anathema
They want power's domination
They have not got the stamina
To choose love as redemption
It's true that love is slavery
For humanity's meager spirits
You told and showed their bravery
But they could not get near it
In the end, Jesus bestowed the kiss
Of the love the Inquisitor despised
The love of neighbor he could scarce resist
It's where the fulfillment of the law abides
