(208-212) Works Of Love Part Two I
Love Builds Up
"Wherever up-building is, there love is"
Have we had the experience
Of feeling built up at another's words?
Spoken in some self disinterest
Caring only for what we've heard
The lover speaks of loving gifts
That the lover is thereby giving
By presupposing that love exists
In the one who is receiving
What kind of person would this be?
When having love to a great degree
The lover would have the quality
For me to see the love in me
It is in love that we are building up
Such building is a transformation
To a purity that will not corrupt
The truth of our love's creation
Could we then make the presupposition
Of the love deeply contained in others?
To offer love without conditions
And make a world of lovers?
This would take great courage
And even greater humility
To build up so the beloved flourish
Even when there seems futility
To build up means from the ground
And love's the ground of everything
This is a thought we can find profound
Well worth using and remembering
