Fractures

Remember To Send for Help – Call an Ambulance

 

Note

If you are not sure whether the injury is a fracture, dislocation, sprain or strain Always Treat as a Fracture

Signs and Symptoms

  • Pain at or near the injury site
  • Not able to move normally
  • Visible deformity
  • Bruising, tenderness, swelling

Treatment

  • DRSABCD
  • Control any bleeding
  • Do not try to straighten the limb, or put it back into place
  • Immobilise the fracture using a splint and broad bandages
  • Use a firm, rigid splint
  • Place padding between the splint and the limb
  • Secure the splint above and below the fracture with bandages
  • Do not bandage too tightly. If the fingers or toes look pale, feel cold or become numb, loosen the splint

  • Place the injured side arm in a St John Sling for support and seek medical attention
