If you are not sure whether the injury is a fracture, dislocation, sprain or strain Always Treat as a Fracture
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain at or near the injury site
- Not able to move normally
- Visible deformity
- Bruising, tenderness, swelling
Treatment
- DRSABCD
- Control any bleeding
- Do not try to straighten the limb, or put it back into place
- Immobilise the fracture using a splint and broad bandages
- Use a firm, rigid splint
- Place padding between the splint and the limb
- Secure the splint above and below the fracture with bandages
- Do not bandage too tightly. If the fingers or toes look pale, feel cold or become numb, loosen the splint
Collarbone Fracture
- Place the injured side arm in a St John Sling for support and seek medical attention
